For my American readers, a controversial, and detrimental bill is set to be voted on in the US congress next week. Now, if you've been reading the news, SOPA, or Stop Online Piracy Act, is, like it's called, a bill to stop online piracy. Read about it here:

SOPA has the potential to threaten free speech, and the Internet.
Now, as fans of a genre of media from Japan, it's pretty hard to enjoy it without some people uploading it onto the Internet. We have no other way of watching it, other than buying DVDs. But not all of us speak Japanese, so we need subbers to do their magic and sub them for us. So even if we buy the DVDs, we probably won't understand them, and won't enjoy them.
So, let's say that possibly the juiciest episode of Gokaiger, or Gobusters comes out. And you need to watch it, because it looks epic. And not only that, but you probably need to have subs because there is a lot of dialogue and dramatic confrontations, so you need to understand Japanese to understand what they're saying, and why did Marvelous get so upset at what Joe just said. Well, you would usually download a sub from one of the more reliable sub sites. But, if SOPA is passed, you probably won't be able to access those sights. In fact, the bill could put the people behind the site in jeopardy. The bill poorly defines what they want to criminalize, that anyone could get penalized.
So the people who work so hard to upload, sub, time, and QC series could face penalties. And this goes for RAWs too.
And this doesn't just go for the current series. A bunch of the older series are really good. And the only way to get a hold of these series is, you guessed it, the internet.
And we, the viewers, could also get penalized as well.
So, if you have an urge to watch an episode of Battle Fever J, and you get hooked, so you download a half a season, and in a few months, there's a knock on your door, you're busted, and could be facing prison time. And all you wanted to do was to watch Battle Cossack (both ones) and Battle Kenya kick butts to disco music, because there was no other way to watch other than, you guessed it, downloading it.

Not Everything is a Shout-Out or Fan Service
Man, this post will piss people off...
I view Sentai and PR as two separate entities. Although if a season of PR is a blatant word-for-word adaptation of a Sentai season, that's different.
Toei and Sentai creators, as well as actors are aware that they have fans overseas, not just in America, but in Brazil, Indonesia, France, Thailand, Singapore, The Philippines, other parts of Europe, South Korea, and tons of more places. However, their target audience is the people of Japan. Series may be dubbed in certain countries (like in Brazil and in The Philippines or South Korea) but it's not like while writing the original series the writers
They don't write stuff for foreign fans, and they don't write stuff for PR fans. Although specials on Sentai have discussed PR, and they have dubbed a few of the series in Japanese, the main audience is Japanese children (and Japanese Sentai fans).
And Sentai series are written in advance before collaborating with Saban or Disney.
Don't act like a show owes you a shout-out. Because that's selfish.
And don't desperately scrounge each episode for something that might be a reference. Everyone's been trying to do that for Gokaiger.
If you see a Yellow Ranger in a skirt, especially if in PR they didn't have a skirt, they're not giving a shout out and saying "oh, in PR GoYellow and GaoYellow were girls, so we're having Gokaiyellow wear a skirt as GoYellow and GaoYellow because of that!" They are wearing skirts to make it more uniform-ic with what GokaiPink is wearing because essentially they are female versions of said warrior.
And wait until the subs come out before you jump to conclusions. I'll have to repeat myself again: Marvelous didn't know which key was ShinkenGold, and Gai told him it's the one with Kanji on it. KingRanger has Kanji on it for King. Then Gai said that it was the other one with Kanji on it, the shiny, sparkling one. It was a hilarious moment, but it was in no way a reference to the fact that in PR KingRanger was called Gold Ranger, and is no way referring to the fact that Saban has adapted Shinkenger into a PR series, and it is airing currently. In Japan, they are only vaguely publicizing it. They probably turned into Shinkenger because Shinkenger is a recent series, and they finally have ShinkenGold's Ranger Key and it is nice to see a whole team represented.
These moments are just coincidences. Not planned coincidences, but coincidences. And they can be what's called "hilarious in hindsight" but using this phrase (trope) to describe these certain nostalgic moments applies mainly to PR fans, unless it's referring to something else.
Using another TV Trope word, "Word of God" refers to something a creator, writer, director, producer, or actor on the show said, that is canon, or what will probably come up in the near future. If you are looking for PR references, then Koichi Sakamoto is God in this situation.
This is by far the only PR reference when Sakamoto (who was stunt coordinator and director on a lot of PR series, and is now directing some episodes of Gokaiger) said this on his blog.
And don't assume that Saban is going to adapt Gokaiger. A lot of the other bloggers have instead been saying "if Saban adapts it." which I like. But other people say that Saban will adapt it. Which, by the way PR Samurai is going, I hope they don't.
So, in conclusion, you can feel nostalgic about Gokaiger, with regards to either Sentai or PR, but don't try to scrounge for stuff you view as references and assume that Luka's purposely wearing a skirt as GingaYellow because Hikaru's counterpart was a female. How I Got Into Sentai
Every blogger likes to write about how they got into sentai, so here's my story.
I admit it, as a child, I liked PR, I even had a Kimberly Barbie Doll (sadly, she lost her ranger uniform, so she only has her civilian clothes). I saw the movie, but I never really saw the series, and I had no idea who the original red, black, and yellow were.
My Junior year of high school, I was in an advanced theatre performance class where we had to do a thirty minute one person one act as our final projects. I played a variety of characters in mine, which was basically the main character's video diary, including the main character's friend, who did a monologue about how lost childhood innocence was similar to the loss of PR. One of the lines was, "I was flipping channels and I saw Mystic Force! Come on, Mystic Force!"
I got a lot of laughs, and when we talked about each others' plays, one kid was like "since when did Rangers wear capes?" "They don't make them like they used to." I really wish I could have said, "technically, it's sentai... so its not PR's fault." but I loved the whole "since when did rangers wear capes?" line someone said, because I wikipedia-ed PR around this time and found out the dark, dark secret, and why the original yellow had a "special accessory."
I never really watched PR as a child, so, guilty pleasure, I watched a few episodes. They were okay, the ones made in New Zealand I could spot, because I know a bad accent when I hear it.
I realized people liked 90s nostalgia, so I incorporated PR into a play I wrote and directed my senior year... it's really confusing, but picture the writer's guild of America in makeshift PR uniforms, made out of under armor. (The play was written around the same time as the writer's guild strike, and during some censorship happening at other high schools in my area). Suffice to say, everyone loved it.
Anyway, in college, RPM came out, and I thought it was the best thing ever, and didn't feel guilt watching it, mainly because it was written for the older fans. It wasn't preachy, people died and stayed dead, there was no lesson of the week, very talented actors, and an actual plot line, and a post-apocalyptic setting. Oh, and they broke the forth wall "why do our zords have big anime eyes?" "Why do we have to shout 'RPM get in Gear' into the sky?" And I was pissed when Eddie Guizilian (is that how you spell his name?) was kicked off, and I was happy the rest of the cast was pissed too!
So, around the same time, I was curious about sentai, which I found out about a few years ago, and I started watching bits and pieces of Sentai. I watched Shinkenger, it was the first series I followed while it aired. As well, I watched the henshin sequences online, and opening sequences online, and was amazed at some of them (my all time favorite henshin was JAKQ), and I gradually fell in love with sentai, and tokusatsu in general. I love superheroes, I love giant robots. I loved watching the 70s and 80s stuff. And the series were amazing, good storylines, and they actually had realistic violence. And the characters were amazing. Although they were selling toys, they still had great plot lines. And not to mention the actors and actresses were gorgeous. And they gradually became more feminist, with strong female characters. When I watched Liveman and some of the older stuff, I was like "you know what? This is pretty cool, I'm sticking with this." I don't know why, but it clicked. And I didn't feel weird watching it. It was like the anime my sister likes, only the real deal.
So I abandoned PR after RPM ended, and stuck solely with sentai, and, as a writer, I realized that the writers were actually copying these great sentai storylines and watering them down (Timeranger was a great ensemble piece that had an important humanistic approach, that you can change your own future, that PR didn't use, and as well, they didn't use the juicy characters of Blue and Yellow as much)--they weren't giving the sentai writers enough credit as they deserved. And as a writer, I was pissed. RPM was really original, and well-written, and most of the PR series (not all of them) pale in comparison to that. So I'd rather watch the original stuff, and as well, the old stuff, from the seventies and eighties. And then, I got into the other tokusatsu: Kamen Rider, Zubat, etc.
Anyway, I hope this doesn't come across as an anti-PR rant. Although, I do hold onto the nostalgia--I have a PR ringtone, that little tune that goes off whenever someone's in trouble, and people think its cool.

How to Annoy People on Forums
Yeah, not a lot of pictures for this one.
Okay, I don't comment on forums. Mainly because the two major ones: ranger crew and ranger board, are associated with power rangers, something I don't want to be associated with, and I'm busy enough as it is. I still read forums for news, updates, links to subs (I found out about one of the major sites I use to get subs thanks to these forums), and the occasional larf (that's laugh in britspeak).
After looking through the three big forums: rangercrew, rangerboard, and henshinjustice unlimited, I was able to find out different patterns of posting or posts themselves that pissed users off, and somehow pissed me off as well. Most of the perpetrators are newbies, but those who are still a little green or regular users shouldn't be making these mistakes. Usually they will be corrected by a moderator or a veteran, however, sometimes moderators don't have to correct them (and they have every right not to, moderators are busy people to). Either a bunch of other users will vehemently correct them. If the user doesn't learn from their mistakes, it will become kind of their signature, like you can tell who is making the comment even if they changed their name, or a forum war will erupt--and although these are hilarious, they are still somewhat useless and annoying for people who use the forum or just read it.
So here is a list on how to piss people off, specifically on tokusatsu forums.
Do not adhere to the basic rules. This includes formatting, quotes, signatures, spoilers, all that good stuff, which usually requires some html. This goes for any forum. Now, a lot of readers aren't annoyed by this, but the more meticulous users are.
Start a fandom war. This goes for pr vs. sentai, pr vs. kamen rider, kamen rider vs. sentai, etc.
Start a shipping war, or dominate the ships. Now, I admit it, for Shinkenger I am a diehard Takeru Kotoha shipper. I was intimidated and discouraged while reading the forums after the support the Takeru Mako shipping got, and how people worshiped Mako. I talked to my fellow Takeru Kotoha shippers, and they said they don't even bother to look at the certain forums that are dominated by the opposite shipping. I'm not sure if they scared us or we just got sick of it. So don't be an instigator. You can write once in while about it, but you shouldn't make every other post raving about the ship, and saying stuff that isn't evident at all. Because you're bound to attract an shipper from the opposite side who is bound to be upset. And behold: shipping war. Also, a lot of these shippers are self-inserters. Therefore, if you blatently insult one ship, you are indirectly insulting the shipper who sees themselves in this kind of relationship, whether if it is a real life relationship with someone that is a lot like the character, an crush on someone who is like the character, or an admiration for the character or actor. So you make the shipper feel bad.
Start a political war. Back to shinkenger, I remember when some people were upset with how Mako wanted to be a housewife and a good mother. Some feminists were upset about that, and said that it's non-progressive. Some feminists who were realists, or realists who weren't feminists said, it's just a kid show, and then more conservative people felt insulted, because they were or knew people or were married to people who are homemakers. Then people actually started insulting the conservatives, and the conservatives insulted the feminists, and I swear I saw a few death threats. I myself am an equalist. I believe everyone has the right to choose what they want to do--even if they are a fictional character, but fictional characters have no free will and--whoa existentialism. But yeah, it can get that dirty.
Rite gramaticaly incorrect massages with speeling misteaks that sond like u r righting this wile u r drunk. This usually invokes the wrath of grammar facsists. And you don't want that.
Discuss something that isn't in the forum topic.
Although this doesn't count as a fan war, just make one offhanded comment on how, for example, pr samurai is better than gokaiger in a gokaiger topic forum. This isn't fanwar bait, but it does make a lot of people frustrated that someone is on their turf: a forum specifically for their interest.
Troll. Period.
Attempt to act as moderator or dominate the forum. Forums have moderators. Don't try to steal their job and then claim you are the original one, or are better than them.
Repeatedly ask, "when is the sub coming out?" "when is the episode going to be on the internet?" "who uploads the movies to the internet? Or even worse "when is the episode going to air?" or "when is the movie coming out?" Subs take either a short time or a long time to make depending on the language strength of the subbers. Instead of asking, go to the sources themselves to see when the sub is coming out. Who knows, they might have released it already. Also, usually a nice poster will just post a friendly link without being asked to to a stream or episode. You know when the episode is going to air, and when the movie's coming out. Google it. Finally, it's not a good idea to repeatedly ask which specific person uploads episodes or movie (especially youtube). Why? Because Toei has been purging copywritten videos from youtube, causing people to create several accounts, and make unlisted videos. People's accounts are being disabled because of it. If enough word is spread around, the people who are doing purging might catch wind of it, and it will be hard to find sentai on the internet. These uploaders like to be secretive.
Ask the above questions after being answered or corrected. You got a response, an answer, or you upset a bunch of people who told you to stop. So stop.

My Dad on the Legend War
When I was a kid, my dad watched the Power Rangers Movie with me. He didn't have to. He will still quote our favorite line from it: But, I'm a frog?
When I was a teenager and flipping through channels, I came upon SPD, and my dad walked in and saw Doggie and said, "Is that George Clooney?"
But gradually, I fell in love the original material: sentai. I wanted to let my dad know that my "giant robot shows" (the phrase I use around my parents) weren't power rangers, essentially.
I didn't want my dad to think I was going to end up like my little sister, who is obsessed with anime, whereas I'm more into Japan in general. (The only anime I like is Crayon Shin-chan.)
I couldn't help but rave about the upcoming Gokaiger to my dad! He was like "uh-uh, yeah." That was the same thing I'd say to him when he would talk about one of the books he was reading. So I decided to send him a clip of the Legend War. I mean, you guys have seen it, right, it was awesome. So many suit actors, beautifully choreographed, teams fighting together.
This was his response:
"So, did these dudes just implode the earth to destroy the bad guys??
Also, I thought I saw Waldo in the crowd !!"
I later talked to him on the phone. He thought it was great. He asked me about that "bug-eyed guy" "their leader." I'm like, "Yeah dad, that's the original red ranger." (My dad was referring to akaranger). "He freaks me out," said my dad.
I just thought his response was funny.

Tsunami Update
Hey guys! I hope everyone's safe and warm!
The emergency response has been good, however, there is still much work to be done. As well, there is a team trying to fix a nuclear reactor which was affected by the earthquake, so we have that to worry about as well.
All of our favorite stars have checked in okay. My friends who are studying abroad in Japan or live there are okay as well.
I've listed the red cross as a way to help, and a lot of toku fans have found another way!
Riders, Rangers and Rambles have teamed up with HJU, Youtube Toy Reviewers, and Renz Media Network sites have teamed up for SUPER HERO TIME!

This will go towards CStoys International's National Relief Aid. Masaki Seike, Regional Director of CStoys inside Japan will be delivering the donations himself!
So go ahead. Every little thing counts.
Now, with regards to the other Super Hero Time. It will probably reconvene next Sunday. One thing I do worry about is the effect of the disaster on the writers' and actors' psyche. The actors are all okay, and very optimistic, though. Hopefully, Toei might use the proceeds of Gokaiger and OOO merchandise for relief as well.
So, to quote Go-on yellow: Smile, smile!

Support for Japan
I'm not sure how many of you guys keep up with the news, but there has been an earthquake, followed by a tsunami (which usually happens if the earthquake is under an ocean) in Japan. Supposedly hundreds of people are thought dead. Many are without homes, or cannot get home. Chaos and anxiety is amok. Many of my friends are from Asia and have relatives there, so this is heartwrenching for them as well, because not just Japan is affected, but a lot of countries near the Pacific Ocean, or part of the ring of fire are affected and warnings have been issued. As well, a nuclear power plant in Japan has been affected as well, although nothing horrible has resulted from it, although people who live near it are required to evacuate.
I checked both Ryota Ozawa and Mao Ichimichi's blogs (both of which I subscribe to on ameblo) and both have posted about the earthquake/tsunami.
Now, the important thing is not to be selfish. The last thing we want to worry about is if gokaiger or ooo will air on Sunday (technically Saturday in the US). Although I am worried that gokaiger might be shortened like decade, although I doubt it.
The episodes set to air, that we have summaries for: 5, 6, and 7 will air, although they might resume airring next week. I'll need to look into the full process of when they film sentai, with regards to episodes.
Because of damage, there might be a hiatus in filming both series. They could either move to places not affected, or take a hiatus.
Now, this next part sounds incredibly lame: You want to be a hero? Sean Akizuki has put a link on his blog to the red cross. Donate. People can use your help. And this will not just affect Japan, but countries near the breaking point of the earthquake which might be affected by aftershocks. And it will help many people who have friends or loved ones in Japan feel okay.
